Area IX is composed of the six southern chapters of Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Annandale, Falls Church, Manassas, Springfield and Woodbridge). It has the largest membership with over 5,000 members. It also has the reputation of leading Virginia in donations to Alzheimer’s Research. A Cornhusker from Nebraska, Pierce started his federal service at the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduation and commissioning, he served 14 years active duty as a Surface Warfare officer in the U.S. Navy, earning his Master’s degree in Operations Research/Systems Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School. Serving mostly in destroyer’s Engineering Departments, he was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, Pearl Harbor, HI, Long Beach, CA and Norfolk, VA. Shore duty assignments were in Monterey, CA and the Washington, DC area. Upon separation in 1980, he joined the civil service ranks and served concurrently in the Naval Reserves. Starting out at the Congressional Budget Office, he then moved to the Department of the Navy with the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon in 1981. He retired as a Senior Executive from there in 1995, and retired as a Rear Admiral in 2003 from his final active duty assignment in Lisbon, Portugal. In retirement, he served for a while as President and CEO of the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.

A life member of NARFE, Pierce was elected 1st Vice President of Woodbridge Chapter 1270 after attending only three meetings. One year later, he was elected President and served the term-limited two years, following in the footsteps of past VFC President Jim Rice.

Pierce has served on the Board of Trustees for the Naval Academy Alumni Association as well as the Board of Trustees for the Navy Memorial Foundation. He has made seven mission trips to Eastern European countries on Young Life Service Projects. He regularly plays the piano for his local church. Pierce has three sons and seven grandchildren.

Virginia Area IX Chapters

Part of the Northern Virginia Caucus

The chapters of Northern Virginia have set up a "NARFE Blood Pool" with INOVA hospital system. If enough Northern Virginia members donated blood to it, our members would have access to FREE blood for such needs as surgery. When you give blood, you can have it credit to the NARFE pool by telling them you are with "Pool Number 7016 - NARFE".
