Meetings are advertised in local newspapers (shortly before the meeting), by the area newsletter and by a telephone tree message through which members are provided the time, place, program/speaker, and a contact person.
Chapter 28 is the oldest NARFE chapter chartered in Area 3 and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2010. The chapter’s strong point is service to members. The chapter has the largest chapter service committee in Area 3. A Service Center is located at the Service Officer’s home (phone (804) 520-3409). If there is no answer Service Committee member may be reached at (804) 530-3809. The chapter is also the first state NARFE chapter to maintain a Senior Navigator’s Center to assist seniors and their families with information available on the internet. This center is maintained in Prince George (phone (804) 458-3835).
The chapter contributes to the publication of five area newsletters yearly (with 5 other chapters). The newsletters are sent to all members, patrons and congressional and General Assembly members. (It is also available on the Virginia Federation of Chapters website at www.vanarfe.org) Meetings are a time of socialization and information sharing on national, state, and other issues of importance to the active and retired federal employees and their spouses. The chapter supports Alzheimer’s research and contributes generously. Funds are raised primarily through an auction of donated items and individual donations. Members also donate generously to both state and national political action committees and are involved in dealing with state and national legislators on issues affecting members entitlements and taxes.
