Monthly meetings are a time of socialization and information sharing on national, state and other issues, with interesting speakers and programs. The chapter is known as “the friendly chapter” with many lasting relationships arising from these meetings. Monthly meetings are advertised in the Chesterfield Observer and other local media at least a week prior to the scheduled meeting, listing the time, place, speaker and a contact person.
The chapter publishes a bi-monthly newsletter, which is sent to all members, prospective members, and Congressional and State Assembly members. The newsletter keeps our members informed on state and national activities that could affect active and retired federal employees and current and future chapter activities. Members are encouraged to send letters and e-mails to congress supporting NARFE’S legislative priorities. The chapter is also active in fundraising for Alzheimer’s research.
In 2015 our chapter sponsored nine motor coach trips for its members and friends. In 2016 ten motor coach trips are planned. These trips include a river cruise to Mt. Vernon and also a 40th anniversary cruise of the Norfolk Harbor. There also are plans for a 10 day New England Canadian cruise from September 29th to October 8th.
The chapter was a sponsor of the 2015 Chesterfield County TRIAD Senior Day and will again be a sponsor at the May 4th 2016 Senior Day. This event is attended by over 800 seniors and is an opportunity to meet and recruit new members to NARFE. In July 2015 we held an open house in place of our general meeting. Chapter officers and committee chairs set up displays to provide information on NARFE’s benefits and programs. Refreshments, activities and prizes were given throughout the program. Five new members were recruited during the open house. In November we held a pancake breakfast to benefit Alzheimer’s research for 70 members and guests. In December we held our annual holiday luncheon at the Midlothian American Legion for 60 members and guests.
*Inclement weather policy: If Chesterfield County Public Schools are closed or 2 hours late on our meeting day, the chapter meeting will be cancelled.
