Monthly Meetings
Chapter 1549 meets for a business and social luncheon on the second Tuesday of each month in the ballroom of The Inn at Vint Hill, about 5 miles east of Warrenton, off US 29. For complete directions visit their web site. Our social hour begins at 11:30, with a cash bar available in the Union Jack Pub, and a scrumptious hot buffet luncheon is ready at noon. Cost is $13.00 by reservation to Bob McConahy at 540-347-1464 by the Friday preceding the meeting. In July and August, we enjoy lighter fare.
We typically have about 35 to 45 folks who join together for the buffet luncheon each month. Vacation plans reduce that some in the summer, but we continue to meet throughout the summer
Our September get-together on the second Tuesday is a special opportunity to enjoy each other at a pot-luck picnic under a secluded shelter by the stream, at beautiful, quiet Rady Park in the town of Warrenton. The regular second-Tuesday date in December is the occasion of our annual Christmas Party at The Inn, our regular meeting place. On these two occasions we do not have business meetings.
Jeanne Stith always has an interesting program speaker for us about 12:30 and our brief meeting follows with news and items of importance to our mission. Every meeting seems to get better as we have the opportunity to talk with our friends, learn more about events of interest in the area, and discuss the ramifications of some of the legislation we wish to influence in favor of NARFE's objectives.
Winter Weather Policy
We key our policy to follow the Fauquier County Public Schools schedule. If the schools open 1 or 2 hours late, we meet as scheduled. If the schools close for the day, we do not meet.
State Activities
We are one of 55 chapters within the Virginia Federation of Chapters (VFC) serving some 20,000 members and we contribute to, and are beneficiary of Federation resources and services. The VFC web site has many links to activities of the state and national organizations, as well as to other sites of interest to seniors and soon-to-be retirees.
Chapter Activities
We hold monthly 50/50s at our regular meetings to raise money for Alzheimer's and other local charities. We keep an Alzheimer's basket open at every meeting to receive contributions for research. Every cent contributed through NARFE goes directly to the research organizations with no deductions for any administrative costs. Please consider writing your checks for annual donations to NARFE/Alzheimer's and dropping them off at our meetings. Alzheimer's is the national charity of NARFE, and we have been donating at the rate of about $500,000 a year. During 2008 we should reach well over the $7 million mark. We have 325 members in our chapter, and about 50 of those are active federal employees. In addition we have a number of spouses of deceased members who have assumed the membership of their spouse.
A chapter newsletter, the 1549 Narfeletter, is published aperiodically. It is mailed to all members of record and to some other chapters in the Virginia Federation. It is also posted on this website for 30 days after issue under the newsletters column, with personal phone numbers and e-mail addresses masked for privacy reasons.
NARFE’s Objectives are to:
■ Sponsor and support legislation to protect the benefits and general welfare of its members on issues such as health benefits, retirement, etc.;
■ Inform members about legislative issues, primarily retirement income and health care benefits, taxation and COLAs;
■ Strengthen the political influence of current and future federal retirees through NARFE-PAC, a political action committee;
■ Cooperate with other organizations seeking to accomplish similar legislative goals;
■ Work in partnership with the Office of Personnel Management to answer questions related to retirement benefits;
■ Foster public recognition and appreciation of government service; and
■ Contribute to the well-being of local communities through volunteer service.
