ALZHEIMER'S
RESEARCH
Since 1985, NARFE members have played a major role in
seeking a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Through its partnership
with the National
Alzheimer’s Association, NARFE supports research into the
cause, prevention, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease as well
as a cure for Alzheimer’s and related disorders. Public education
on the need for research – our only tool for conquering the disease
– also is an important focus. NARFE Chapter 1270 is proud of its
support for this worthy cause and strives to provide its members opportunities
to make a difference.
NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund
In collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association, NARFE members
have donated more than $8.6 million to the NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund.
100 percent of NARFE donations to the Fund are allocated to research.
NARFE is a member of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Zenith
Society, a group of about 50 donors representing the highest level of
giving. NARFE is one of only four organizations belonging to the Zenith
Society and, of the four organizations, NARFE is the “number one”
contributor.
CHAPTER 1270’s ROLE
Congratulations
to Chapter 1270 and Felice Pearl for the chapter's great work in
fund raising for Alzheimer's research. Since 2004 our Chapter has
raised over $50,000 for Alzheimer’s research and was recognized
as Virginia's leader in fundraising in 2009 and 2010, and as the
runner-up for the whole country in 2010. Our major source of fund
raising is from ads and ticket sales for our annual fashion show,
which was held on October 29, 2011, at Westminister in Lake
Ridge. In addition to the annual fashion show, we raise funds from
a number of other activities such as 50/50’s at our meetings
and events, bake sales, dining events at local restaurants, and
donations made at document shredding events coordianted by Felice.
At our June and October shredding events, we received more than
$2,400 in donations. Another major source of funds is through the
generosity of our members, who make individual donations for Alzheimer’s
through our Chapter. In this photograph, Felice Pearl receives this
year's fund raising check totalling $10,438 from then-Chapter President,
Gaston Gianni, Ahapter 1270 Past President, and Pierce Johnson,
Vice President, Virginia Federation of Chapters, Area IX. The
This year's Fashion Show, co-chaired by Betty Koger and Brenda Carswell, was a huge success! Many thanks to both co-chairs for their tremendous efforts in coordinating the show -- which went off without a hitch. The fashions, provided by Potomac Mills Brooks Brothers and Dress Barn, were fabulous and the models were outstanding! In a letter to President Joyce Pieritz and fashion show helpers, Betty and Brenda explained that the show depended on a lot of team work:
Hello, everyone.
We want to thank you for all that you did to make the NARFE Chapter 1270 Fashion Show and Brunch, 29 October 2011, such a wonderful success.
- To the committee members: Your help, guidance, and previous experience in this endeavor was greatly appreciated. You all did a remarkable job in making this a really great event for our NARFE chapter's annual fashion show.
- Brinda: the fashion show program booklet looked terrific.
- Carolene and Ruth: the Silent Auction baskets were beautifully done.
- Barbara: another great job being the MC for the show.
- Felice: a remarkable job in getting ads and donations.
- Chris: for managing the sale of the tickets and keeping track of them.
- Ray: for printing the fashion show tickets.
- To the models: You all looked so good in the outfits that you wore and you did such a great job. We heard many wonderful comments on your performance in the 6th annual fashion show. We hope that you truly enjoyed your experience and that you'll look forward to doing this again in the near future. We did get two pictures of the fashion show in the News Messenger.....Joyce and Ernie made the news and they're really good pictures.
- To the pianist: Mrs Favor, thank you for the wonderful piano music to accompany our models. It was a pleasure meeting you and listening to you play.
- To the generous person who paid for the printing of our program booklet....thank you!
- To those who made donations for the silent auction baskets and for door prizes.....thank you for your generous contributions! To the helpers: Our thanks to all of you for volunteering to sell Raffle tickets, 50/50 tickets, accepting Alzheimer's donations, and manning the Silent Auction table. And thank you to all who helped pick up program booklets and the origami pouches from around the room at the end of the day.
We've heard a lot of comments regarding the fashion show and brunch......everyone had a great time...they enjoyed the fashion show (and we know some people went shopping to purchase some of the items they wore/saw)...and everyone we heard from really enjoyed the brunch.
Finally, the money our chapter made (from selling the brunch tickets, ads for the program booklet, individual monetary donations, the raffles, 50/50 tickets, the silent auction baskets, and donations specifically to Alzheimer's the day of the event) totals approximately $7700.00.
Thank you again. We appreciate everything all of you did to help in this special event to benefit Alzheimer's.
It truly was a great day!
Sincerely,
Betty Koger and Brenda Carswell
